    Site Ranks

Post by Alex (Old Account) on Mon Apr 26, 2010 11:14 am

    Newbie
    (0-35 posts)

The newbie rank features a broken triforce in which the upper triangle is placed above the left one. This lead to a meme created by users from 4Chan after somebody screwed up the code to make a triforce sign. 'Newfags can't triforce' was a quickly spread saying and became one of the many memes from 4Chan. Originally this rank was called newfag as well, but considering the hostility of that word, we decided newbie would be less frightening for new members.

    GLaDOS
    (35-74 posts)

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is a fictional artificially intelligent computer system found in the Valve Software video game Portal, voiced by Ellen McLain. She initially appears as a voice to guide and aid Chell, the player's character, through the game's chambers, but over time, her words and actions become stranger, and she makes multiple attempts to kill Chell. After a face-to-face confrontation with GLaDOS, Chell destroys her and escapes. GLaDOS was universally praised for her contributions to the quality of Portal's writing, winning multiple awards.

At the end of "Portal," Ellen McLain performs again as GLaDOS in a song called "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton, which has become an internet hit, receiving praise from multiple outlets for the quality of its writing. It has been featured in multiple installments of the Rock Band series as free
downloadable content. It is also available for purchase as a part of the Orange Box original soundtrack on iTunes.

A picture named GLaDOS-tan (an anthropomorphic GLaDOS) was used for this rank image.

    Ace
    Attorney (75-129 posts)

In the Ace Attorney series, you go around as a famous lawyer called Phoenix Wright to prove the innocence of several convicts. Whether they are framed by coworkers, wound up in a misconception or victim of govermental corruption, you will work your arse off to get them out of it. A popular internet phenomenon based on the Ace Attorney series are the so called 'phoenix wrong' spoofs. Those spoofs depict several scenes of movies, series, or music videos acted out with Ace Attorney characters. They started on newgrounds.com, but soon made their way into youtube as well, receiving an even greater audience.

The series received great reception ranging around 7.6 to 8.1 on Metacritic for the entire series. As an homeage to these great series, we have this rank pretty early on in the listing.

    Shrine Maiden (130-199
    posts)

Shrine Maiden are those who live to protect and serve various Shinto shrines in Japan. In the touhou series, none ca argue with the fact that Reimu is the most famous of these, forever serving the Hakurei Shrine. Reimu's weapons include her Yin Yang orbs and an infinite supply of anti-youkai scraps of paper. The touhou meme related to Reimu the most is probably the one of armpit love, implying that touhou fans have a sexual fetish for bare armpits, seeing how Reimu flashes them throughout the game.

    Weeaboo
    (200-299 posts)

Weeaboo is a bastardisation of the word 'wapanese', probably a contraption of 'wannabe' and 'Japanese' or simple 'fake Japanese'. 'Wapanese' was used to give a name to all those born outside of Japan with an obsession to Japanese culture similar to that of the Japanese Otaku's (obsessive fans of anime manga, or whatever form of media from the land of the rising sun.). Wapanese was one day mispelled as 'weeaboo' on 4Chan, after which the use of it increased in popularity. Eventually, it replaced the word almost entirely. The rank image came from a famous comic concerning weeaboos:

The comic probably doesn't refer to this type of weeaboo, but it was mangled up in the meme anyway.

    Cthulhu
    (300-349 posts)

Cthulhu is a mythological creature, originally created by H.P Lovecraft for 'The call of Cthulhu' in 1926. It is a humanoid creature with features from an octopus and a dragon, characterized by his head filled with tentacles. Cthulhu appeared several times outside Lovecraft's fiction and somehow made it's way into the internet.

    Nerd
    (350-398 posts)

If you thought games from today were annoying, you should watch James Rolfe's (also known as 'The angry video game nerd') videos. He will show you that games were perfectly able to suck just as much back in the days. Picking specifically bad rated games from the 80s and the 90s,he will often vent his anger on bugs, annoying gameplay aspects or unnaturally difficult levels. He became a popular phenomenon for many of his quotes and, of course, inventing the 'F-bomb'.

    Angry German Kid (399-499 posts)

The 'Angry German Kid' was a viral video on youtube depicting a heavily unreal tournament addicted kid getting angry over the fact that his computer won't work properly, hence getting killed in game.

The video quickly became popular on youtube, spinning off tons of parodies featuring him playing several video games, like WoW. NicoNico Douga took this to a whole new level and starting making remixes with him of several popular themes:

The original video turned out to be scened. The German kid himself is known in Germany as 'der echten gängster' (the real gangster) and has a knack of talent to make impressive plays like this. He did it to show the world how the parents view their children's addiction to gaming and why that view is totally ridiculous, of course.

    Lolcat
    (500-599 posts)

You might have an excuse for not knowing about all other memes, but the Lolcat memes you absolutely have to know. Being funny captions underneath funny images of cats, they're simple, silly and easy to make. Having all the qualities to launch as a meme, it quickly did. The rank image features one of the first lolcats, which image had the caption 'I can haz cheezburger?', which is now known as 'the place to be' to find your lolcat pictures.

In the hands of YTMND however, this picture was mangled in with the 'NEDM' fad (Not Even Doom Music) which depicted said cat's head 'taking revenge' on several humans for having burned a cat and put the recordings on YTMND. Just like 4Chan, YTMND is not amused if cats are hurt, which makes me think cats somehow control the internet.

    Morshu
    (600-700 posts)

Morshu is part of the 'YouTube Poop' internet culture. He originally was a shopkeeper from the badly received CD-I game (as if there's a well received one...) 'The faces of Evil'. He has just two lines, but they are often used anyway.

"Lamp oil, rope, bombs! You want it? It's yours, my friend...as long as you have enough rupees!"

    "Sorry, Link. I can't give credit. Come back when you're a little...mmmmmm...richer!"

Especially the latter including the misplaced MMMMM were used in many vids to make egregious remixes:

    Tingle
    (701-799 posts)

Tingle is one of those characters in Zelda you love to hate. At least America does, since Nintendo specifically decided not to ship 'Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland' there due to expected low sales. Tingle in all of his male fairy glory, is known for being either loved or hated with people. He was just another side character in Majora's Mask, just floating around, selling maps. People didn't pay attention to him in 'oracle of ages' either. It basically wasn't until 'the wind waker' when he got despised on several places on the internet, such as the original Nsider. His increased 'quirkyness', together with his high prices for those 'triforce' charts made him the target for a lot of hate. Not soon after, Nsider made tingle fanclubs as well and fierce battles ensued.

    Gar
    (800-999 posts)

When watching so many anime you are bound to come across a character that is 'so manly that it makes all the surrounding men look like pussies'. This character is so manly that you wish you were a 13 year old school girl who would gladly 'take him'. You want to be like him, but realize
you are not manly enough. This is when you call him 'GAR', which originated from a user on a certain forum making a typo when wanting to say 'I'm gay for Archer' (Archer from fate/stay night). The type quickly became an often used new word. The rank image depicts Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. One of the characters renown for being GAR.

    Cartman
    (1000-1199 posts)

Eric Cartman is arguably the most famous South Park character. With an often rude additude, the mean fat kid made many grins appear on people's faces. The rank image depicts him dressed up as a police officer. In the episode he told us to 'respect his authority', which became part of the internet culture as we know it.

Seriously: You should respect this guy's authority.

    Pokey (1200-1499 posts)

Porky Minch (ポーキー・ミンチ Pōkī Minchi?), called Pokey Minch in the English-language version of EarthBound, is a primary antagonist of EarthBound, and the main antagonist of Mother 3. In EarthBound, he begins as Ness' obnoxious friend. He has a little brother named Picky Minch, who is much braver than he. He joins Giygas, becoming his right-hand man, and is regularly seen attempting to thwart Ness.

    Boxing Chen (1500-1999 posts)

Boxing Chen is 'another one of those touhou memes' depicting an image of a 'boxing' Chen on boxing day. It first appeared in this flash: http://www.walfas.org/?p=621

    Vocaloid
    (2000-2299 posts)

Vocaloid refers to the many artificially made voices in the world of today. This seems to be especially popular in Japan, with Hatsune Miku being the most popular. Many remixes have been made featuring vocaloids like Hatsune Miku, but the Loituma remix remains the best known one.

    Leekspinner
    (2300-2699 posts)

Directly related to the vocaloid is the Leekspin video itself. This internet phenomenon depicts a scene from Bleach in which Orihime makes a perfect spin with a leek she just bought while shopping. The loop appears just once in the anime, though became a popular viral vid, when having
    Loituma's polka added as music.

    Spartan King (2700-3299 posts)

King Leonidas is the famous king of Sparta in ancient Greece, passing down in history as the king that lead a small army of spartans defeating a massive army of persians. This is as historically correct as the movie '300' will get. Next to the core, the events in the movie are just fiction with no resemblance to what was actually written about said events. This, of course, made it possible for the movie makers to create some well known scenes, with the most popular one being the 'THIS! IS!
SPARTA!" scene. Trying to be a serious movie, but horribly failing at it, made it an instant target of both YTMND and 4Chan, becoming a rather large part of internet culture.

    Angel of Hope (3300-3999 posts)

Nanael is the Angel of Hope from the Queen's Blade series. She monitors the queen's blade tournament and often fails in doing so. For her stupid behavior, she must prove her right to the archangel by 'not spilling her bottle of milk' throughout the course of the tournament. She is also
secretly plotting to create a world of only men to act as her servants.

    Black Scottish Cyclops (4000-4699 posts)

The Black Scottish Cyclops is our forever charismatic drunk Demoman from Team Fortress 2. The rank name origined from the 'meet the demoman' video in which he called himself this.

    Desu (4700-5999 posts)

Suiseiseki is a character from the Rozen Maiden anime most notoriably known around the internet for using the word 'desu' a lot. The character caught the eye of 4Chan and it became a meme to'desu'. One of the rules of the internet, as made by 4Chan even states that there is never enough desu, hence people today still perform the pratice of 'desu spam', which is
characteristic for a certain type of weeaboos.

    Prinny
    (6000-7199 posts)

Prinnies are your everyday penguins from the netherworld of Disgaea. They are actually human souls not worthy to go to the afterlife yet, either working to earn their right in heaven or in the netherworld. Prinnies often use the word 'dood' and explode when thrown. The first game to be
entirelly based on prinnies is 'prinny, can I really be the hero?' for the PSP.

    Pi-Face (7200-8999 posts)

Pi-Face is the nickname for Minimimoto: one of the more famous TWEWY (the world ends with you, a RPG for the DS) characters. With him, Square Enix has proven that they can even make math fetishists cool people. His typical catchphrases include 'so zetta slow', 'sohcahtoa' and 'Sine! Cosine! Tangent!'.

Of course, his quirkyness made him the target of youtube users wanting to make awesome remixes.

    9 Ball
    (9000-9999 posts)

Ball is the nickname for Cirno, one of the well known characters of Touhou. She is an ice fairy with a knack for being dumb. She also thinks 'she is the strongest' and tries to prove it, failing at doing so. (taken you don't suck 'that much' at touhou.) Ball refers to 9 ball pool, in which the last ball is 9, making yourself a fool if you pocket that one first and thus losing.

    Kamen Rider (10000-12999 posts)

The Kamen Rider Series, (translated as Masked Rider Series) is the overall name of a franchise of Japanese tokusatsu which generally features an insect-themed motorcycle-riding superhero who fights supervillains referred to as kaijin. The franchise began in 1971 with a show titled Kamen Rider which followed college student Takeshi Hongo and his quest to defeat Shocker. Over the years, the popularity of the franchise has grown and the original series has spawned many television and theatrical sequels.

    The Kid (13000-??? posts)

The Kid is the main character from the game: 'I wanna be the guy'. If you are fond of masochism, I suggest you try this specific game out right here.If you can complete this game and keep your cool, you have officially earned my respect.

    Special ranks:

    Saber

(Given to people for any kind of special achievement. VIP members of sorts.)

Sabre is one of the seven servants of the holy grail war in Fate/Stay Night. She focusses on sword combat and wields an invisible sword. She is the love interest of Shirou in the first route of the VN and also in the anime. She is also Pote's waifu.

    Banned

Given to those repeatedly breaking the rules. You will no longer have access to this website.

The rank image is Light Yagami from Death Note. Surprisingly fitting, is it not?

    Staff ranks:

    Former Staff

Former staff members, ranging from Style Ninjas to Administrators. They are given this memento rank to show they used to work for the site and that they are still appreciated.

Yusuke Urameshi is the icon for this rank because he is former "Spirit Detective" hero from the anime Yu Yu Hakusho.

    Style Ninja

Style Ninja are graphic artists here on FrontierSoft. They lend a hand in every single design-related job, such as the skins and rank images.

Kakashi Hatake reigns as their icon because he is calm, cool, and calculated. With both style and intelligence he is well-known in the Naruto universe.

    Moderator

Moderators are your standard issue internet warriors. They fight off hordes of spammers, trolls and flamers and look cool while doing so. At the same time, they are hated by the public for either not being lenient enough or too lenient.

Whatever you do, don't become a mod. You'll ruin your reputation for the rest of your life.

The rank image depicts Marisa from Touhou in all her glory.

    Site Administrator

Administrators are those who run around and do stuff for the website. They make your boards, your ranks, promote you, demote you and decide the site's direction. They also do the same stuff as moderators. Whatever an admin does, it is always wrong and his taste in moderators is simply despicable.

The rank image depicts Yukari from Touhou in all her glory.

    Tech Administrator

Tech administrators are basically administrators with more power. They can do neat stuff like FTP and fiddle with the site's coding. If the site happens to crash, blame them.

The rank image comically depicts Kirby as the Engineer from Team Fortress 2, Sam's trademark.

OMG NO!!! THAT IS A SPRING ONION!!!! XD

This is a "leek" it has a darker color to it and has a thicker stem.

And this is a spring onion (aka green onion) which has the lighter color and is much thinner.

So I hope you know the difference now xD
